This will be the third year of hosting the golf outing for the BJ Thomas Memorial Scholarship Foundation. My plan is to make it better every year, and more importantly, be able to give more to BJ’s family every year. Let me start by thanking all of you who have been so generous with your donations in the past. For those of you who don’t know the story, in October of 2020, driving home with a massive headache thanks to a few guys in the Birds Eye family (you know who you are Tim and Ed) I received a call that forever changed my life. B.J. Thomas was one of my best friends and someone who was absolutely beloved in my town. In 2011 we decided to start a “travel” baseball team with our boys. This is probably different than the horror stories you have read about in the youth sports circuit. There were no tryouts, just a bunch of kids who lived near each other and wanted to play more than our little league offered. I was lucky enough to coach that team for 8 years with B.J. in the dugout for every pitch. Memories that will last forever.
After taking that phone call 3 years ago and finding out we lost BJ, the only thing I cared about was making sure his wife Kelly, and his sons AT and Zach were taken care of, and so the BJ Thomas Memorial Scholarship Foundation was born. Last year’s outing was a huge success. It was a day that we got to share stories about the wonderful person that B.J. was, as well as raise a significant amount of money for his family. I want 2023 to be even better.
Once again I have set some lofty goals with what I hope to give Kelly and the boys this year. There are number of ways you can get involved:
- If you’re a golfer, please let me know if you would like to reserve a foursome.
- If you work for a company that gets involved with charitable endeavors, we have sponsorship opportunities (we are a registered 501©3 organization for tax purposes) you can find in the attachment of this email.
- If you’re not a golfer, but would like to get involved there is a Venmo account listed on the flyer to accept donations. We also hold a raffle at the event, so anything that can be added to the gift baskets is a huge help (restaurant gift cards, golf items, etc.).
